My goal is to help students understand music beyond the printed notes. I teach physical mechanics of how to play as well as the way every detail enhances the shape of sound in a composition (or even an exercise). Experimentation is key and students are encouraged to try different techniques such as additional dynamics to develop precise control. Wherever a student is in their flute journey, I give them tools to grow their artistry. My own flute journey continued into university (with Paolo Bortolussi) and in advanced lessons (with Carmen Roberts) where I discovered the power of learning theory and scales. Difficult passages are simplified when recognized as a simple G major scale starting in a different pitch. Students practice more effectively and learn music that is more detailed when theory is a part of the lesson. In addition to teaching, I play with Fraser Valley Wind Ensemble and Trinity Western Orchestra. In my free time, I read music biographies and science fiction novels, and enjoy time with friends, family, and the cat!
