Lessons for everyone
Music lessons at the Chilliwack Academy of Music are for everyone. As a registered charity, CAM works hard to ensure every student is supported and has access to the music lessons they want. We offer lessons for a variety of instruments, genres, ages, and levels of experience; there is something for everyone at CAM.

Bass

Erik Jalava
As an instructor, Erik is flexible, patient, and encouraging with his students. He teaches all levels and ages. As a certified Education Assistant with the Chilliwack School District, Erik knows that every student learns differently. Erik uses his own student-centered method of teaching, created based on each student’s own musical interests. As a songwriter, Erik also teaches songwriting and structure to his students, allowing them to expand their creativity and musical abilities.
Carson Loeppky
Carson teaches private lessons, and works best with older kids (7+). He also has experience with adult students. Carson’s education as an upright bass player makes him an ideal teacher for those new to the instrument, or more experienced students. Students are sent home with handwritten lesson notes to refer to during their practice time. Jazz, classical, and contemporary musicians are all welcome, as Carson believes his students learn best when they are encouraged to pursue their unique musical interests.
Rod Swanson
An experienced guitarist, Rod teaches bass guitar to all students ages 5+. Rod knows every student is unique, and teaches to each one’s different goals and musical interests. Whether a student is looking to learn bass guitar as a hobby, or hoping to reach advanced levels, Rod is a knowledgeable and caring instructor who has a deep passion for sharing music with his students, enjoying watching them learn and grow.

Bassoon

Alexis Summers
As a multi-instrumentalist, Alexis has gained a lot from her various experiences in ensembles and learning from many skilled musicians. While working on her undergraduate degree at Trinity Western University, Alexis studied under bassoonist Dr. Allan Thorpe. Alexis enjoys watching beginner students learn to love their instrument and get to know it, and she likes to help more advanced students work on fine details. Teaching a student musicality is Alexis’s favourite thing; when you listen closely, you can see all the different ways one may express even just a single note.

Cello

Ruthanne Clements
Ruthanne offers private lessons to people of all ages and levels. As a classically trained cellist herself, Ruthanne primarily teaches classical music, and often uses the Suzuki method in her instruction. From absolute beginners to experienced musicians, Ruthanne is a great instructor for a variety of cello students, and has a true passion for teaching.

Clarinet

Alexis Summers
As a multi-instrumentalist, Alexis has gained a lot from her various experiences in ensembles and learning from many skilled musicians. Alexis received her Master of Music degree in Clarinet Performance at the University of Manitoba. Alexis enjoys watching beginner students learn to love their instrument and get to know it, and she likes to help more advanced students work on fine details. Teaching a student musicality is Alexis’s favourite thing; when you listen closely, you can see all the different ways one may express even just a single note.

Drums

Carson Loeppky
Carson teaches private lessons, and works best with older kids (7+). He also has experience with adult students. Carson’s passion for helping students achieve their individual musical goals makes him a great fit for beginner to early intermediate drums students. After lessons, Carson’s students are sent home with handwritten lessons notes to refer to during their practice time. With an emphasis on enjoying the experience of playing music, Carson encourages his students to learn about different genres and styles so they can discover what they love about music.

Flute

Sarah Bell
Sarah offers private flute lessons to all ages of interested students, though she works especially well with beginner flutists. Sarah’s personal experience with different genres including jazz, folk, and classical makes her a great fit for students who are interested in learning a variety of techniques. Many of Sarah’s students are in band programs at their schools, and find Sarah to be an excellent tutor when working through their method books or learning their band repertoire. Sarah enjoys helping students make progress and achieving their personal musical goals.
Carmen Roberts
Carmen offers private flute lessons to any age and level of student. Familiar with early childhood education, Carmen works with young musicians as early as four years old. Carmen’s experience as a performer and passion for teaching makes her a great instructor for those looking for an experienced, knowledgeable teacher. Students who study with Carmen can expect assignment notebooks, as well as having to record their practicing minutes. Repertoire is often classical and traditional RCM method. Young students can also look forward to earning prizes for hard work.

Guitar

Piano

Colleen Denoni
Colleen offers private piano lessons, and works well with driven, motivated students. Colleen enjoys teaching older kids and teenagers, as she loves watching her students grow and achieve their goals. Colleen’s many decades of teaching experience makes her a great fit for students who want to accomplish high levels of piano performance, as many of her students go on to further study music in university, or participate in prestigious festivals and competitions. Colleen believes in being a kind and encouraging influence in her students’ lives

Lia Dvir
Lia offers private piano lessons to all levels and ages. As a classically trained pianist, Lia is a great instructor for students hoping to play classical repertoire, and uses the Royal Conservatory of Music as her primary teaching method. Lia is dedicated to helping students develop their skills and pass exams through the RCM program. Her goal as a music teacher is to foster an encouraging and supportive environment for all students.
Karin Fehlauer
Karin offers private violin lessons to students of all ages and levels. As a classical musician, Karin often uses Royal Conservatory of Music methods in her lessons. Karin loves passing music on to others through teaching, and helping students learn to love music. As an instructor at the Academy for over 25 years, Karin is a reliable and highly qualified instructor for students of any level
Emily Jou
Emily offers private lessons to piano students of any age and level. Emily’s love of classical music, especially the romantic era, makes her a great fit for students looking to learn classical piano music. Due to her years of experience as an accomplished musician, Emily is a qualified teacher of any level of student, up to those studying for upper-level Royal Conservatory examinations. Emily welcomes all students, and her goal is to help each one reach their musical potential.
Jessica Jou
Jessica offers private piano lessons and teaches any level and age. Jessica’s experience as a concert pianist makes her an ideal teacher for students looking to learn concerto repertoire, prepare for festivals and competitions, and work towards completing Royal Conservatory exams. Jessica has experience teaching students with no previous piano experience, as well as higher level pianists.

Teng Mackay
Teng offers private piano lessons to students ages 5+. Her favourite thing about teaching music is watching a student learn to love it, and find enjoyment from playing. As a teacher, Teng is flexible with what style of music a student is interested in leaning, as Teng herself has experience with a range of repertoire. Teng believes diligence and perseverance are very valuable qualities for a student to have.

With her vast experience with Commercial Contemporary Music (CCM), Lisa offers piano lessons to students who enjoy playing musical theatre and pop music, and often teaches both piano and voice to her students. Lisa’s work as an Education Assistant in the Chilliwack School District makes her a great teacher for students who have special needs, or need an extra accessible and inclusive learning environment. Lisa uses Microsoft OneNote for lesson notes, finding it to be a useful tool to communicate practice details to students; she is also familiar with online lessons, and has experience teaching students remotely.

Alexis Summers

Jessica Jou
Jessica offers private music theory lessons for all ages and levels. With extensive experience guiding students through the Royal Conservatory of Music curriculum, she helps learners strengthen their understanding of music, prepare for exams, and support their overall musicianship. Jessica enjoys working with complete beginners as well as advanced students looking to deepen their theoretical knowledge.

Emily Jou
Emily offers private and group theory lessons for students of all ages and levels. She received her training from the Royal Conservatory of Music and received first class honours on her ARCT Analysis, Keyboard Harmony, and History exams. Emily has experience working with students of all levels and believes that learning theory is essential for students to excel in piano as it touches on the most important aspects of music such as quick note-reading skills, reading complicated rhythms, and an overall understanding of how music is structured.

Viola & Violin

Rachael Abramoff
Rachael teaches private lessons to students of violin/fiddle and/or viola. Rachael’s training in viola and violin performance, as well as her experience in professional orchestras and chamber ensembles, makes her a great instructor for students interested in learning classical repertoire. Additionally a fiddle player, Rachael is also a qualified instructor for those looking to play folk and roots music.

Voice

Sheila Ardies
Sheila teaches various styles of vocal music, such as the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) method, musical theatre, opera, oratorio, and gospel. Sheila teaches private lessons to any level of student ages 11+, and many of her students are teenagers. Sheila also teaches adults and seniors, and her favourite part of teaching music is watching the “light turn on” when a singer starts to reach their goals.
Alexandra Baird
Alexandra teaches private voice lessons to any level of student, from beginner to advanced. Alexandra works well with students age 7-18, as she finds she builds the strongest rapport with older kids and teens, though she is also able to teach adults. Alexandra likes to balance classical technique with stylistic versatility, and she has experience with classical music, Royal Conservatory (RCM) method, musical theatre, choral, and some opera. Alexandra is a great choice of instructor for students who are looking to explore different styles of singing and improve their technique.
Lisa Scyner
